Questions to Consider

   
1.     How are national events used to frame the novel?

  1. What role do spiritual values play in the characters’ lives?
  2. How does the environment shape the story?
  3. Compared to 1973, where are we now as a people and a nation? What has changed and what has remained the same?
  4. What do the Native American characters and the other characters in the story have in common and what makes them different?
  5. What role does the various civil rights struggles—women, Native Americans, Chicano, gay—play in the novel?
  6. Discuss Lizette’s relationship with Marian.
